Sony’s Christmas Ads Are Hit And Miss

Sony have a bit of an uphill battle in front of them this Christmas. Console sales have been poor compared to the competition, their flagship games for the season haven't been the MEGAHITS they were hoping for and Home is...well, yes, you know all about Home. So what was needed from the company was a rousing holiday season television advertising campaign! One that shows off the very best features of the console, the best games, the benefits of the online network! Well, across their two commercials, they got it half right. The PS3 one above will seem like moonspeak to anyone who doesn't already know what LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm are, but it's got exploding couches and looks pretty, so it's OK in my books. But the second one?

It's for the PlayStation Network. What it should have said was "kinda like Xbox Live, but free". Instead, it takes...well, it's got Pain in it. And the unreleased Home. And...Hancock. Egads.

New American PS3 ads are very impressive

Impressive. That pretty much sums up how we feel after watching this new collection of PlayStation adverts for holiday season 2008. The three commercials you are about to watch are all very different, but they have one unifying theme (well, other than PlayStation duh). They all utilize holographic images to show off PS3-exclusive titles. Our favorite one is posted above, which shows off some exclusive action titles: Resistance 2, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, and the Dark Knight film on Blu-ray.

Another commercial touts the PlayStation Network. It clearly promotes lively, social gaming as you'll notice the happy people going about their daily business. It's interesting to note that each person has their own holographic game image imposed on their bodies giving a hint at saying, "hey, we've got a little something for everyone." A sharp contrast to this one is the next, somewhat dark series of adverts. It's sort of eerie with its slow-motion and starry-eyed actors. It's an interesting piece that asks you "have you made your wish list yet?" We wonder if you have?

Check out the other two vids after the break, or, get ready to see them on TV very soon.

Trophies for all games from January onwards

Can you believe it's been six months since information on PS3 Trophies were first leaked? Since then there have been many games released that support the feature though there are still, sadly, a few that do not (Fallout 3, we're looking at you). If you're one of the many who didn't enjoy playing the "will they, won't they?!" game for the past six months, you'll be happy to hear that all that will be coming to an end with the close of the year.

Starting January 2009 all games will be required by Sony to have Trophy support. This is according to VideoGamer.com who received confirmation from a SCEE representative. We've emailed SCEE to check that this is true. Considering the number of games that released this year with Trophy support (a great deal more than we expected, that's for sure), we'd be surprised to see any games release without the feature starting, well, now to be honest. Hopefully the idea of a "Trophy patch" will soon be a thing of the past.

Amazon does us one better: PS3 as low as $200

So the UK may be getting a pretty sweet deal with an 80GB "Blu-ray entertainment" PS3 pack for 300 quid, but for us Americans, we've got something even sweeter ... potentially! Why potentially? Because some of you out there will get the deal, while others will not. This is how it works: Amazon is offering three different discounted packages to its members; however, they will have to vote for only one of these as the one they want.

Casting a vote enters you in a chance to buy the items at the discounted price, BUT only if the majority votes in favor of your bundled set. If your choice wins, then you have a chance to be one of the lucky 500 who can snag a PS3 at that amazingly low price. Seriously, a full functioning PS3 with built-in Wi-Fi and an HDD (plus extras) for the price of the stripped down Xbox 360 Arcade? It's a good value and worth trying if you don't already have a PS3. The voter's bundle winner will go on sale by Friday, Nov. 28. So, just what are the choices? The image above shows it all, though we've written everything down after the break. And, of course, hit Amazon to vote!

[Thanks Miguel!]

Italian Boy ‘Addicted’ To Playstation, Says Actual Doctor

Posted by Stuart Houghton in Playstation 3 News, Playstation 3 Tutorials  TAGS in Playstation 3 News, Playstation 3 Tutorials

13 year old Lorenzo Amato was rushed to hospital by his father, where doctors at first thought he may have been suffering from a stroke or brain disorder. But no - after closer examination, the medics diagnosed 'Playstation Addiction'.

Local politician Antonio Buccoliero was quick to comment, "They eventually managed to take care of him once they understood that this was a strange kind of mental detachment connected to his Playstation." It is unknown if this condition could be contracted through rival consoles or if it is a Sony-only disorder. Or indeed if it is an actual medical condition and not something they just made up to make a point about gaming.

The boy had been unable to speak and appeared 'confused' following a marathon gaming session. He reportedly told his father to throw out his console saying, "If I even think about it I want to throw up."

Boolat Announces Topatoi

Posted by Shrygue in Playstation 3 News, Playstation 3 Tutorials  TAGS in Playstation 3 News, Playstation 3 Tutorials

Nov

via IGN

Boolat announces Topatoi, one of the first PlayStation 3/PSN projects in Eastern Europe.

Topatoi is a refreshing blend of platformer and puzzle genres, combining the old school impact of the legendary titles like Bubba 'N Stix or The Lost Vikings with original and inventive gameplay mechanics.

The player controls a machine called ATG which works just like a spinning top toy. Basically this is one of the main points of the game. Topatoi is very physics-oriented. ATG should be spinned correctly, since the "spin amount" and thus the overall speed affects device's movement and behavior. Mastering the physics model, you should lead the lead character through multiple stages, filled with obstacles, traditional platforms (it is a platformer game after all), enemies and dozens of puzzles.

Topatoi will be available this Winter through PlayStation Store. More information is available on the official website: http://topatoi.boolat.com
